In book 2 chapter 7 Jean Valjean was sentenced to 19 years in prison. He was imprisoned 5 years for stealing a loaf of bread for his hungry family. The rest was for attempts of trying to escape. Prison turned Jean into a hurt man although he was being fair about his punishment he also knew that it was wrong.
In this chapter Jean Valjean was given a meal and after he finished he tells the Bishop how the others had better meals which was rude because he should have been thankful that he even had a meal.
